Honors

  • 1996 winner of the Ella Sengenberger adviser of the year award given by the Indiana High School Press Association.
  • 1997 winner of the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Distinguished Adviser Award
  • Ball State Indiana Scholastic Alumni Award winner in 1998.
  • Newspapers advised have been awarded top local and national awards such as the Columbia Scholastic Press Gold Crown, national Scholastic Press Pacemaker and Best of Show, and the Indiana High School Press Association Hoosier Star.

Teaching Experience
Currently the Publications Director / Communications Specialist at Warren Central High School and in my 26th year of teaching journalism and advising school publications. I teach two sections of the beginning journalism class, two sections of the newspaper, a news bureau class, and spend one period working on township and school communications projects.

Journalism instructor for IUPUI since 1997. Classes I have taught include J-463/563, Computer design, which currently uses Adobe InDesign as the primary software; J-465/564, Advanced graphic design, which uses advanced Adobe InDesign, PhotoShop, and Illustrator; J-100, Computer applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and computer assisted reporting; J-200, writing and editing.

Frequently teach adviser and student journalism workshops at Ball State and national conventions and also have been asked to judge high school publications for national contests.

Recent Publications
Published a book titled "A Guide To Authenticity and Restoration for the Porsche 911 from 1974 through 1989." It is being distributed worldwide and has sold over 10,000 copies.

Columnist and speaker on Civic Journalism, technology and design.

Wrote an article defining Civic Journalism for the scholastic press which was published in the Quill and Scroll Magazine 1997.

Freelance feature writer for the "Image" eastside Indianapolis. Newspaper and other publications. Stories include the Indpls. 500, Brickyard 400, IROC races, Mt. Comfort Air Show, Automotive trends, Firefighters/EMT, Indiana Ghost Trackers, and Cheech Marin's Chicano art exhibit.
