Sunday, May 13, 2007 saw the graduation of 32 students from IUPUI's School of Journalism. Graduates celebrated at IUPUI's Commencement ceremony in the RCA Dome and then received individual recognition at the School's ceremony in the Indianapolis Convention Center.

The ceremony, conducted by Executive Associate Dean James W. Brown, recognized all 32 graduates and certificate awardees for 2007 with many attendance with family and friends. Guest speaker and IUPUI School of Journalism graduate Karen Braeckel, director of the Hoosier State Press Association Foundation, reminded graduates that their learning is only just begun and that they must be prepared for a life long relationship with learning to keep up with changing industries and changing times.

The school also recognized individual graduates accomplishments. This included recognizing Chancellor's Scholar, John. L. Stallings and top academic graduates: Jessica E. Epp (graduated with Highest Distinction) and Mary Jane Michalak, Kimberly Pratt, and John L. Stallings (graduated with High Distinction).

Also honored were two students who had been selected as 2007 IUPUI Top 100 students: John L. Stallings (B.A.J.) and Chetrice L. Mosley (Certificate in Public Relations).

Prof. Conducts Webchat for State Department

Sherry Ricchiardi, Professor of Journalism at the IU School of Journalism in Indianapolis conducted a webchat on May 22 for the U.S. Department of State on Threats to Journalists and Media Professionals.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, as of April 2007, 19 journalists have been confirmed killed thus far in 2007, with another seven deaths unconfirmed. While war reporting is currently the biggest threat to journalists' safety, publishing stories critical of government or of certain political figures remains a safety risk in some countries.

During the hour-long webchat, participants from around the world submitted comments about press freedom and the increasing danger to journalists from repressive governments, organized crime and violence in conflict zones. According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, 143 media professionals and support workers have been killed in Iraq since the war began in March 2003, making it the deadliest spot in the world for the press.

Ricchiardi addressed several inquiries from Egypt, where press freedom has seriously deteriorated over the past five years, and from Sri Lanka, Romania, Morocco, and Zimbabwe, all countries where journalists are at risk either from oppressive state officials and criminal elements or armed conflict. The session was part of the State Department’s “Democracy Dialogue” webchat.

Dr. Ricchiardi is a specialist in international journalism with extensive experience in reporting from around the world. In addition to serving on the faculty of the School of Journalism at IUPUI, Ricchiardi is a senior writer for American Journalism Review magazine specializing in international issues.

J Grad Takes Road Less Traveled

Posted by: rdittmer on Thursday, May 03, 2007 - 02:00 PM
Grads

IUPUI School of Journalism alumna Amber Hirsch has traveled many roads. Born in Colorado, Hirsch, now 36, lived in or visited over 42 different states and attended more than 17 schools before graduating from Cowan High School in Muncie in 1988.

Now serving as a practicing attorney with the U.S. Air Force in Iraq, Amber reflected on her IUPUI experiences.

In the years following graduation, Amber chose a slightly different path than many of her classmates. She became a mom and opted to stay at home with her two sons until they were out of kindergarten. When her youngest boy started school, Amber realized she was ready to return to the classroom as well — as a student at IUPUI.

Though Amber may have waited a few years before beginning her college career, she certainly did not waste any time once enrolled. She obtained two bachelor’s degrees while at IUPUI, one in political science, the other in journalism. Perhaps more impressive is the fact that Amber graduated in December of 1998 as the Chancellor’s Scholar in both the School of Liberal Arts and the School of Journalism.

When asked about her experience as an IUPUI School of Journalism student, Amber reflected, “It was wonderful.”

Awards

The Hoosier State Press Association honored Dr. James W. Brown, Executive Associate Dean of the School of Journalism at IUPUI with its 2006 Distinguished Service Award January 24 at its Annual Meeting at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown.

The award was presented to Brown for his long and distinguished service to HSPA, professional journalists and college students. The award was presented by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels.

Among Brown's many achievements for HSPA, he created the HSPA digital photo contest that allows photographers to submit entries in digital formats as they do professionally. HSPA was the first state press association to switch to digital format.

"His willingness to share his knowledge and creativity both in and outside the classroom directly affects the very method of disseminating information," said Karen Braeckel, HSPA Foundation Director. "His efforts also benefit citizens and society at large -- locally, statewide and nationally."
